The Same Name Confusion: Shamshad Begum (Chamiya Bai) Of Delhi

The Shamshad featured in this photograph was a singer from Delhi. Her daughter was Naseem Banu and grand daughter Saira Banu. The other Shamshad Begum was the famous playback singer.

This Shamshad Begum (in picture above) is not the playback singer Shamshad Begum. This Shamshad Begum was a classical singer and the mother of Naseem Bano and Nani of Saira Bano.

Playback singer Shamshad Begum was different. The confusion created as the names of the two were the same.

Shamshadbai Dilliwali (also known as Chhamiabai with Saira Bano) / Shamshad Begum with daughter, Usha Ratra

The third Shamshad Begum (Ragini) was an actress, Nek Parveen being one of the films she acted in. The other two Shamshad Begum’s (in the Hindi Film Industry) that we know of Shamshad Begum the singer and Shamshad Begum urf Chamiya.

Gulzar kii…Chhoti Si Kahani Si

शाख़ों पे पत्ते थे
पत्तों में बूँदे थीं
बूँदों में पानी था
पानी में आँसू था ~आऽ ~आऽ

65 seconds of pure bliss as the prelude, Filling up the musical valley within the heart with the raindrops in the form of accordion, violins, flute, xylophone & madal sounds … Totally overwhelming on every listen.

Remembering a song that originally was not part of the script, but was destined to be conceived & produced, and later to be cherished for ever.

19554064_1474115552631218_881655937835696308_nA complete magic show within a song, where Pancham chipped-in, with not one but Two Primary Accordions to come up with a scintillating effect. The accordion vibes here create beautiful ripples in the heart and gels so well with the flow of the Rain & the Train … The magic makes me to dream to board the train immediately.

छोटी सी कहानी से, बारिशों की पानी से
सारी वादी भर गयी
न जाने क्यों, दिल भर गया
न जाने क्यों आँख भर गयी

S .Mohinder

—————————-
In a brief senseless moment I mentioned that I would like to write something for GHZ sometime. What was a joke initially became serious and I found myself with a couple of articles on S.Mohinder sahab. Just like every GHZ episode, I felt not an iota of interest and avoided it for weeks.

I hadn’t heard a single song except “Guzra hua zamana” and didn’t relate to his music at all. Soon the approaching deadline started feeling like the school annual exams…perish or pass I told myself … I felt thoroughly incompetent, knowing I couldn’t add any knowledgeable insights on someone I clearly knew nothing about. Did I mention one of the articles was in Hindi which felt like Russian in every sentence? I imagined myself sending apology letters to Aditya & Archana and deactivating my FB account …till a brilliant plan came to me.

I would just be myself as on every GHZ episode, bored , apprehensive and wondering how I’d survive this theme….I would listen to his songs and simply walk you through his movies “oohing and aahing” at the lovelies with much help from Pankaj Rag & Harjap Singh Aujla saahib… Read the rest of this entry »
