Shamshad Begum – ‘Dharti ko aakash pukare’

“शमशाद बेग़म का स्वर भारत के उन खेत खलिहानों का स्वर है जिसमें कुदरत की सौंधी ख़ुशबू समाई होती थी. मज़े की बात ये है कि वे बिना किसी तालीम के फ़िल्म संगीत की ओर आईं और नूरजहाँ,सुरैया,ज़ोहराबाई अंबालेवाली,जद्दनबाई,अमीरबाई कर्नाटकी,राजकुमारी जैसी लोकप्रिय आवाज़ों के बीच अपनी एक अलहदा पहचान बनाने में क़ामयाब रहीं.उल्लेखित गायिकाओं के बाद की पीढ़ी शास्त्र,अनुशासन और बदलते संगीत के सोफ़ेस्टिकेशन को रिप्रिज़ेंट करतीं हैं लेकिन शमशाद आपा का ख़ालिसपन हमें बहुत अपना सा लगता है. वो हमारे घर-आँगन की आवाज़ लगतीं हैं.नौशाद और ओ.पी.नैयर ने उनसे बहुत ख़ूबसूरती से काम लिया. इसकी ख़ास वजह है.नौशाद का संगीत भारत के गाँवों से आया है सो शमशाद आपा में वह मासूमियत सुनाई देती है और ओ.पी.की मौसीक़ी पंजाब का ठाठ लिये हुए है सो शमशाद बेग़म अपने गीतों में वह अल्हड़पन,बाँकपन और पंजाबन की मस्ती को तेवर देने में भी क़ामयाब रहीं हैं.
शमशाद बेग़म का जाना पार्श्वगायन के उस दौर का ख़त्म हो जाना है जब सेलिब्रिटी कल्चर ने पैर नहीं पसारे थे और वैसा गाया जाता जैसे हिन्दुस्तानी अवाम की तासीर का गाना था.

खज़ानची से लेकर गंगा मांग रही बलिदान तक शमशाद का सफर !

• 14 April 1919 को जन्म 
• 1937 से लाहौर रेडियो पर गाने की शुरुआत
• मकबूलियत मिली ,और जल्द ही ‘खजांची’ ,’खानदान’ जैसी शुरूआती फिल्में .
• संगीतकार गुलाम हैदर का साथ मिला  और फ़िल्मी दुनिया में जल्द ही छा गयीं 
• ओ पी नय्यर,नौशाद ,सज्जाद हुसैन अगले संगीतकार रहे इस आवाज़ को इस्तेमाल करने वालों में .
• नौशाद के साथ तकरीबन 19 फिल्मों में 61 गीत गाये,जिसमे शाहजहां (Jab Usne Gesoo bikhraye is the credited first song.)
• गणपत लाल बट्टो से शादी की ,जिनके निधन के बाद अपनी बेटी और दामाद के साथ ही रहीं .
• मीडिया से शुरुआत से ही परहेज़ किया ,आलम ये कि अपनी तस्वीर तक खिचाने से परहेज़ करती थीं .
• अपने एक साक्षात्कार में संगीतकार ओपी नय्यर ने शमशाद की आवाज़ को मंदिरों में बजने वाली घंटियों  की उपमा दी
• 2009 में पद्मभूषण से सम्मानित .
• 23  APRIL 2013 को निधन

There is depth as well as volume in his voice, and his mastery of the classic modes is

There are times when I fee I would be lost without him. The music director may tire of rehearsing a song, but not Rafi. His capacity for hard work is infinite, the mark of this genius. The number of songs Rafi has sung for me is legion, but I will mention particularly the duets in CID, “Garib Jan Ke” in “Chhoo Mantar” and “Yahaan Hum Wahan Tum” in “Shrimati420” Rafi is his own severest critic and genuinely admires rivals like
Talaat, Manna Dey and Hemant Kumar.

It is typical of him that he works with equal ardour for successful and for struggling music directors.
The personification of plain living and high thinking. Rafi wears a smile as easily as he does his achhkan, and is always exuding warmth and bonhomie.
