Clarinet and Flute were two most favorite instruments of Khurshid Anwar. In his very first film Kudmai(Punjabi) – 1941, he used Clarinet as the main instrument in the song – ‘Dil ainj ainj karda’, sung by GM Durrani. Clarinet was played by Khurshid Anwar’s life long friend and Ustad Bhai, Ghulam Mohiuddin popularly known as Ustad Sohni Khan one of the finest Clarinet players of undivided India. He also played Clarinet for Master Ghulam Haider in his Lahore films.
However, my today’s pick is another immortal melody of Khurshid Anwar from film Koel beautifully sung by Noor Jehan. In this song the Clarinet has been used in a style of Jugalbandi. The wailing sur of Clarinet soulfully enhances the feelings which Khurshid Anwar wanted to convey:
