How you became SJ Fan?The process is a little difficult to define. I guess you just instinctively like something. In the last question, I replied Sanyasi songs had a huge reference. I should have mentioned Sangam too. Sangam is one of the two LP records that I recall used to play a lot at my place when I was around 7-8 years. Aarzoo’s Bedardi baalma tujhko, is another song that somehow jumps out from those days (we weren’t in India at that time). All Lata Mangeshkar, by the way. That’s the voice which I was drawn too. But then, all SJ as well for the music part. Remember, Lataji was present in all heroine songs ( if I view from a 7-year old’s perspective), but these few from SJ are firmly etched. When dad bought me a ‘dictafone’, what I recall is having Sanyasi songs recorded in it (by placing the player in front of the tv while watching the film on VCR), and also Sangam, (same process, but with the LP player). So I now ‘owned’ these two album songs, in my tiny dictafone cassettes.Leap forward a few years, returned to Delhi, while watching one Chitrahaar, Kathputli’s ‘Bol ri kathputli’ came on. And my memories are razor sharp there. I was lying on the couch. And with that song I just jumped up. Of course, again Lata Mangeshkar, but interlude music had me very ecstatic.

Fast forward more years. College and post-grad. Building my own personal collection. All I did in those years, browse music shops, get SJ films cassettes (other than contemporary stuff): Kanhaiya/Mai Nashe Mein Hoon, Hariyali Aur Raasta, Dil Ek Mandir/Dil Apna Preet Paraayi, Singapore, Anari/Chori Chori, Amrapali, Saanjh Aur Savera/Ek Dil Sau Afsaane, Shikast/Poonam are a few I recall.

It’s their interludes that had me excited & exhilirated. I would so often just wait for the interlude orchestration to begin, because it is so rich, so full of music & the recording tenor is just so right.

So of all the ones I listed above, I am posting the Kathputli song for this question.
