He started his career in Lahore under the tutelage of Maestro Pandit Amarnath ji. Batish ji learnt a lot under him and was soon the go-to male singer for him (just like Zeenat Begum was his go-to female singer). Both of them did a lot of good work in those early days even before Daasi. It is really sad that all has gone into oblivion. The music in Lahore in those days was very soulful punjabi music with a folk tilt to it and both were really adept in it.
I am sharing this rarest of rare solo of Batish ji for Pandit Amarnath. This was recorded for a punjabi movie called Gawandi (meaning Neighbour) in 1942 and is one of the first movies where this great duo worked together. Enjoy this adorable song singing the now ubiquitous refrain heard so many times later in songs but this one is most charming.
